CivicBrand in London at City Nation Place Global

December 22, 2021

Our team was proud to be nominated for a 2021 City Nation Place Award and attend the City Nation Place Global conference in London in November.

Our work in Downtown Waco was nominated for an award in the “Best Use of Data” category. This category was all about the strategic use of data and how a place refines and shapes its brand and/or marketing strategy through insights. We were the only American nominee in this category as our fellow nominees hailed from Ontario, Chile, Cape Town and Israel.

When in London

No visit to London would be complete without some sightseeing. Brisa represented us in the UK and totaled 26,253 steps on her first day there, walking from the Southbank to Parliament Square, through St. James’s Park to Buckingham Palace, up Hyde Park to Oxford Street, and finally down to Piccadilly Circus. We love walkable places!

Our Work in Waco

Waco, TX has experienced extreme tourism growth over the last several years, thanks in large part to Chip and Joanna Gaines of HGTV fame. While Waco is a mid-sized city (population as of 2019: 135,858) that sits on the road between Dallas and Austin, Chip and Jo’s Magnolia Market regularly attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. Located in Downtown Waco’s Silo District, Magnolia Market is a major attraction for regional and day trip visitors.

The initial ask when we were contacted by City Center Waco for this project was to design parking signage that would make it more obvious where Magnolia visitors could park. However our research showed us that downtown had a connection and walkability problem rather than a parking problem. We developed a temporary placemaking activation plan for all of downtown, and used actual visitor data to guide the strategy for implementation and prove the project’s success.
